Patio Grow Op

Want to avoid pesticides, but can’t afford organic? Start a backyard grow op - not for pot - for veggies. You can grow veggies in a few square feet.

Those Patio Planters

Build a small planter and divide it into square-foot segments. In one square foot, you can grow 16 radishes, 12 carrots, or one tomato plant. In a small corner of a patio, you could grow 12 different vegetables!

You can make your own planter with simple tools and $20 of wood. All you need is a frame - no bottom if it will be on the ground. You can make a tabletop garden if you have a small patio and bending down is difficult.

The Good Earth

You want to spend some money on dirt. It sounds ridiculous to buy dirt, but with a small, dense garden, good soil is critical. We suggest a mix of equal parts soil, compost, and peat moss with some added perlite. Good soil will pay off in the long run.

Starter Veggies

Start with tomatoes, carrots, beans, snap peas, lettuce, and cucumbers. Check with your local nursery for the kind that grow best where you are.

Don’t forget herbs. Herbs tend to have higher pesticides, and nothing beats the flavour of fresh herbs. Some easy herbs you can grow on an apartment windowsill include oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, and mint.

Not only is growing your own vegetables good for you and tasty, but it’s fun. Nothing beats the satisfaction of tending your own garden.
