Diagnosed with bone cancer at age 18, he had his right leg amputated. Two years later, he was determined to raise money for cancer research by running across the country. On April 12, 1980, he began in Newfoundland. By July, he had made it to Ontario and was gaining attention. On August 31, outside Thunder Bay, after running 3,339 miles, he had to stop. The cancer was back. He died less than a year later. On his run, he raised $24 million for cancer research. Since then, annual Terry Fox runs across the continent have raised over $700 million for cancer research!
