The Sioux legend of the peace pipe tells of two young men hunting in the hill country. Coming down from the crest, they saw a beautiful woman. As they approached, they noticed she was carrying a pipe. One of the young men said to the other, ‘Let’s lie with her.’ The other replied, ‘We must not do this and harm her.’

The woman approached, saying, ‘I do not wish any strife. I am on a mission.’ She laid the pipe down and sat on the ground. The first young man leapt on her to ravish her. Immediately, a storm came and wrapped them in clouds. When it lifted, only the young man’s bones remained. The young woman said to the other, “The pipe is coming to give you abundance.” He ran as fast as he could to deliver the message to the chief.

As the woman walked into the camp, all fell silent. She sat and spoke. “There shall be peace among you, and this pipe will help you. If any man misuses the pipe, it will destroy his family.” The woman set down the pipe and walked away toward the hills. She stopped, looked back and then ran. As she ran, she was transformed into a buffalo and disappeared.

The legend of the pipe points to the abundance that comes with a strong peace and the destruction that follows when peace is abused. Let us live in manifold peace which brings wholeness.
