Although initially banned by her parent from enlisting, at age 18, she served as an auto mechanic in WWII---one of the few female mechanics and the first female royal to serve in the military. When Winston Churchill was prime minister in 1952, she became Queen at age 25. Throughout her reign, she provided stability and wisdom during a time of rapid cultural change. One way her commitment to helping people was shown was in the $2 billion she raised for over 600 charities. Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered as one of the most successful and beloved monarchs.
