Whether you’re soaking in your bathtub, sweating in the sauna at the rec center, or just sitting in a jacuzzi, heat is a miracle medicine hiding in plain sight.

Crank up the Immune System

When you heat up your body by just one degree, about what happens when you sit in a hot bath for 15 minutes, your body goes into overdrive, fixing itself. Your immune system wakes up like it just had three cups of coffee. Fighter cells that kill germs multiply faster than rabbits. The way all mammals deal with infections is to bring the heat. Most viruses and bacteria can’t stand the heat. That is why when you have an infection, you often get a fever. Any Heat Will Do

You don’t need a fancy Finnish sauna. Any sauna works just fine. Fifteen to twenty minutes, three to five times a week. That’s it. Can’t afford the gym? Run the hottest bath you can stand. Sit there for half an hour while you read a magazine or scroll on your phone. Your body doesn’t care if you’re in a $10,000 sauna or a yellow bathtub from 1973.

Beat flare-ups with Heat

Chronic inflammation is the silent killer behind heart disease, diabetes, and feeling like death warmed over every morning. As we age, our bodies produce more inflammation, which is the cause of many diseases. Regular heat exposure drops inflammation markers by up to 5% for every weekly session. Do It Without Dying

Start slow. If you’re new to this, begin with 10 minutes in moderate heat. Work up to 20 minutes over a few weeks. Drink water like you’re crossing the Sahara, at least 500 ml before and after. If you feel dizzy or your chest hurts, get out! It’s not a tough-guy contest.

Who Should Skip the Heat

If you’ve got uncontrolled high blood pressure, serious heart problems, or you pass out when you stand up too fast, talk to your doctor first. Common sense applies. And bring a buddy, it’s safer and more fun.
